Politics: ASABA-THE ongoing presidential and National Assembly elections, in parts of Asaba and its environs is being marred by late arrival of materials.   Our correspondent who is monitoring the exercise in area, reports that the materials were still being sorted out at Uzoigwe Primary school and Ahaba primary school. However, there is a large turnout of voters in the areas visited.  Some voters spoke to newsmen, expressed anxiety over the delay in the commencement of the exercise. There was large turnout of voters at Uzoigwe Primary School, Ward 09 of Oshimili South Local government area, but officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC were still sorting materials for distribution to units at about 9am. The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has announced the postponement of the elections in some parts of Lagos, Rivers and Anambra States following disruption of the exercise due to violence.  INEC boss, Prof Mahmood Yakubu Specifically, INEC said elections in Akuku Toru and Bonny local government areas of Rivers state as well as some parts of Anambra and Lagos would be conducted on a later date, saying mostly affected is the contest for the federal legislative seats.  “The commission has received reports of violence and ballot box snatching in some areas leading to the disruption of the process. We have asked the Resident Electoral Commissioners RECs and the Electoral Officials on ground to submit their firsthand reports in relation to some of these incidents.  We are still receiving reports relating to incidences in some states of the federation but we have received reports relating to incidences in Akuku Toru and Bonny local government areas of...

It took Atiku Abubakar, the PDP Presidential candidate and his wife about six minutes to cast their votes in Adamawa.  The former Vice President described the voting as “so far, so good.” He voted about 10 20 am. He said the turn out was impressive and hoped that INEC would be able to cope. He said he looked forward to a smooth transition. Asked whether he would accept the result wherever it swings to he said “I am a democrat”. 

By: Our correspondent THE Candidate of the PDP in the Bayelsa East Senatorial district of the State, Chief Ipigansi Izagara has raised alarm over alleged hijack of election materials in Nembe Basambiri and Okoroba areas of the state. According to him, the shooting and hijack of materials were sponsored by the opposition party supporters and alleged that one person has been killed and five others injured. He said the armed attack against PDP members started around 10pm on Friday with chasing out of PDP members in the area, “they have hijacked materials from our area with the assistance of soldiers ” Also speaking, a chieftain of the PDP from Okoroba community in Nembe council, Benjamin, also alleged that in ward 11,12 and 13 of the area, the materials have been diverted with the aide of security agents. 

By: Our Reporter   Edo State Government has announced that schools across the state are to resume on Wednesday, February 20, for the continuation of the second term academic session, after the mid-term break. In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Mrs. R. E. Obahiagbon, the government said that the mid-term break for 2nd Term ends Tuesday, 19 February 2019. According to her, “This is to inform the general public that the mid-term break for 2nd term (2018/2019 academic session) ends today, Tuesday, 19 February, 2019. Schools are expected to resume tomorrow Wednesday, 20 February, 2019 “All schools are by this announcement advised to comply accordingly.”

By: Our correspondent institutions of higher learning in the country revealed a very low turn out of students on campus. Thus, while teachers are preparing for lectures, the students are nowhere to be found for learning. Situational reports revealed that some of the available students at the University of Benin, UNIBEN, had arrived the campus before ASUU suspended the strike to serve as INEC official during the elections. Some new admitted students and undergraduates who spoke with one of Our correspondents , displayed some levels of fear to return to school, envisaging the likelihood of violent before,during and after elections. They were in the opinion that if they go back to school now, they would be forced to return home before or during the elections. ‘’I would rather prefer to be at home with my food stuffs and return after the election." He said.

The Alumni Association of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna has said that it will construct a 5,000-bed student hostel at the permanent site of the 36-year-old institution, the National President of the association, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya, has disclosed. Alhassan, who made this known while fielding questions from newsmen on Tuesday, did not disclose the cost of the project but said the hostel “will be student friendly” and would complement the efforts of the university management which is also embarking on similar project. According to the national president, the scheme would address the shortfall in hostel accommodation at the main campus of the institution. FUT Minna with a population of 23,000 students, has 4,402 available bed spaces, which had also resulted in most of the students staying off campus.

- Some university students have expressed mixed reactions following the suspension of the three - month old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Students ( ASUU) . The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN ) reports that the strike was suspended on Thursday , Feb . 7, after a conciliatory meeting between ASUU and representatives of the Federal Government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Nigige . The lecturers had demanded for the implementation of agreement entered into by the government with the union , including university revatilisation fund and earned allowances. T he Chairman of Governing Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ), Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe, has said he does not foresee an extension of the registration for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) beyond February 21 deadline. Speaking while monitoring the ongoing registration of candidates in some Computer Based Test (CBT) Centres in Lagos on Friday, which he described as seamless, Ndukwe urged candidates planning to take the 2019 UTME to do so now while there is no pressure at the Centres. ” I don’t foresee an extension. ASUU CALLS OFF STRIKE The Academic Staffs Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its three months prolonged strike in order to Continue its academic activities in earnest to salvage the future of  both Graduating and Matriculated Students on various institutions of higher learning within the Country. This was disclosed during a press briefing. The union suspended the strike after a memorandum of Action, MoA, it reached with the Federal government towards the revitalisation of public universities. The ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who announced the suspension, however, said that the union had embarked on the strike to “stem the continued slide into rot and decay in public universities since the 1980s.” He however decried the unpatriotic attitudes of some university chancellors whom he said tried to undermine the union’s struggle towards ensuring that universities in the country are revitalised.
